Decmber, the 1980's, the Cold War between the Soviet Union and the American led West is in its final decade. In Northern Russia the Soviets newest submarine, the Red October, is launched. The Red October is a ballistic missile sub with a new silent propolsion system rendering her nearly invisable, and making her a deadly threat to the Western powers. Her Captine is Marko Ramius, and along with most of his officers he has made a decision, Red October will defect to the United States. The Soviet Northern Fleet is mobilized to destroy Red October, the Americans and British fleets mobilize to save her, and one CIA analyst, Jack Ryan, is caught in the middle, trying to save Ramius, secure the Red October without the soviets wising up.
The first novel by the legendary Tom Clancy, is a must read for anyone who loves a good story. Detailing both the Soviet and American naval operations, as well as behind the scenes cloak and dagger activities of the CIA. A must read.
