Another excellent novel by Tom Clancy, asides a likeable hero in Jack Ryan, Clancy brings to life CARDINAL a tragic and lonely man who has served his country honourabley for years but now finds himself destined to suffer a traitors fate. Kudos to Clancy for fleshing out the KGB agents who hunt CARDINAL and making them human.

The first novel by the legendary Tom Clancy, is a must read for anyone who loves a good story. Detailing both the Soviet and American naval operations, as well as behind the scenes cloak and dagger activities of the CIA. A must read.

When Armor at Fulda Gap was published the world was undergoing great change as the Soviet Union was on the brink of collapse and the Cold War was winding down. Cooks novel invisions a time a few years in the future when hardliners have seized power in Moscow and decided to launch a strike against NATO forces starting World War III. Focasing on the first week of the war Cook tells the story of American forces trying to defend Central Germany from the Soviet invasion. Cook writes in a semi-documentry style treating his subject like history rather then fiction. Interesting for sci-fi junkies (Cook has both American and Soviet forces using near future weapons) as well as for military buffs, the book, though short may be too technical for the casual reader. Final verdict, Interesting but certainly not a essential reading in 2007.

June 1967: After several months of tension and provocations by her neighbors, and fearing an iminent invasion, Israel strikes first, bombing Egyptian airfields. This is the begging of the Six Day War, in which tiny embattled Israel faced an defeated the combined might of the Egyptian, Jordainian and Syrian Armies. By wars end the Arabs would be humilaited on the battle field and Israel would have won control of Jerusalem, the West Bank, Gaza Strip, Sinai, and the Golan Heights.

A year after the war Michael Bernet traveled to the Middle East to interview the particapents in the war. The Israeli soldiers and civilians who had lived under constent threat of extermination by their Arab neighbors. Arab soldiers who soon became cruelly dissillusioned with the propaganda of their leaders and the Arab civilians who began the war cheering on their armies only to find themsels living in Israeli territory by wars end.

Not the best book on the Six Day War, however Bernet offers some good stories of the average person who was caught up in the conflict. Most important of all for todays reader are the final chapters where Arabs and Israelis offer there views on the uncertain future they faced and continue to face to this day.

Special Note: Bernet reports that the Israeli's captured a handful of Russians in the Golan Heights and reports claims by Israeli troops of hearing Russian voices over the radio, raising the possability that the Soviets where acting as military advisors for the Syrian Army.

All I can say is WOW. This book is amazing. Gregory Benford, a professor of physics and astronomey, obviously knows his tech stuff, but where he really shine is in describing Toby, and envoking a sense of awe and fear and most of all plausabilty. Toby becomes real. Amazing work Mr. Benford.

Not the best example of it's genra, still this novel is short and sweet , and Bay keeps you turning the pages. Check it out.

Better by far then Shadow of the Wolf, the novel still falls short of The Hangman's Crusade. Still it is well written and should keep you turning the pages. Check it out if you get the chance.

James Barwick second novel is much better then their first. Gone are the annoying moments of Deus Ex that plagued Shadow of the Wolf. Instead we have a chilling and compelling description of what might have happend in the Reich during late 1941- early 1942. Barwicks exploration of the machinations behind Heydrichs death is convincing, throughout I was convinced that they had probably struck closer to the truth then anyone will ever realize. Highly reccomended.

Shadow of the Wolf

May 10th 1941: Captain Alfred Horn of the Luftwaffe is assigned navigator on an Me 110 piloted by Rudolph Hess, Deputy Fuhrer of the Third Reich. Hess is enroute to an airfield in Scotland for a clandistine meeting with a senior American General. Before the Me 110's flight is complete it is shot down by a RAF Spitfire, Hess is injured and it falls to Horn to complete the mission. Horn soon finds himself trapped in a hostile country with only a lone American service woman as a friend. Soon everyone is after Horn and the information he carries, the British, the Americans and the dreaded SS.

A quick read, which is a good thing. For a book trying to say "this is how it could have been" there is an awfully lot of coincindences/acts of fate that allow Horn to escape from desperate situations and I found that to wear thin pretty quick. There are much better World War 2 conspiracy novels out there.

Will Rabjohns work has brought him to Northern Manitoba. He is a wildlife photographer who specializes in endangered species and he has come to capture the polar bears of the region on film, unfortunatly for Will things go wrong, and he is nearly killed by one of the bears. Comatose Wills mind journeies back to the tiny English village where he grew up in and relieves his encounter with the mysterious Jacob Steep and Rosa McGee. Will's encounter with Steep, The Killer of Last Things, has profoundley influenced his life. Awakening from the coma Will returns to San Francisco only to be tormented by Lord Fox, an animal spirit who has until recently lived quietly in his head. Will well be drawn home to England, there to once again meet Jacob and Rosa, this time as enemies. Wills future and the future of the world depends apon him discovering the true nature of Jacob and Rosa, and finding the long hidden Domus Mundi, House of the World.

Well the book drags at times, Sacrament, is one of Barkers most personal works. It's protagonast Will is one of modern fictions few openly and proudly gay characters (like Barker). Yet Barkers description of Will's life as a homosexual in San Francisco, well interesting, does tend to distract from the books better parts, most of these in the flash back to Wills childohood or scenes dealing with Jacob and Rosa. Sacrament relies less on fantasy elements then most of Barkers work and the novels gay main character may cause others to forgo reading the book... there loss, as the book deserves a wide audience. Well not perfect, Sacrament is highly recommended. One hopes Barker will one day try to get this made into a movie.

Shortly after unleashing the assassin Charlie has a change of heart and hires John Furie Zacharias aka Gentle to find Judith and the assassin before it's too late. Gentle, a womanizing master forger who once loved then lost Judith, agrees and leaves London for New York to intercept Pie. When Judith and Gentle see something of Pie's true nature they are introduced to the Imajica and it's wonders. The Imajica, 5 Dominions, 4 of which are bound together and the 5th, Earth, cast adrift. Judith, Gentle and Pie will learn truths about themselves and be given the chance to make the Imajica whole once more. Yet they have many enemies, in the 5th a secret society will stop at nothing to prevent the Reconcilation of Earth, well in the Reconciled Dominions a tyrant's empire crumbles and he see's the 5th, wollowing in ignorance of magic, valunerable to conquest. Even if these enemies are defeated Reconciling Earth with the Imajica may hold other dangers as well...

Imajica is an absolutley amazing work of fiction. Clive Barker has created yet another mythology to capture one's imagination. Barker tackles some tough theme's in this novel and makes one think about the nature of things we've been taught. Long but worth while. Imajica is recommended for anyone who has ever dared dream.

Written in 1965 by Hubert Aquin well he was in prison for his involvment with terrorists in Quebec, Next Epsiode, appeares to be largely autobiographical. The novels unnamed narrator is in a Montreal prison and writes down his experiances in Switzerland on a mission to murder a Swiss banker working with the RCMP, for the FLQ. The basic plot is farely straight forward yet Aquin appears to spend most of the novel rambling on about his love for a woman or his love for Quebec and his longing for revolution mixed in with several musings about suicide (ironic as Aquin shot himself in 1977), rather then bother to move the novel forward. Mayhaps it reads better in French or speaks to seperatists but this was one novel that can be passed over.

Several months later Franks brother Rory and his wife Julia move into the house where Frank was taken by the Cenobites. A chance accident offers Frank the chance to escape the torments of the Cenobites with Julia's help, but what to do with Rory and his friend Kirsty?

Clive Barker's novella is a quick excellent read into the macabre. Those Cenobites just reek evil. Not as poetic as some of his other work, still anyone looking for a quick read could do worse.

England 1985: Marty Strauss, gambler and convicted thief is doing time in jail for a failed robbery, something he attempted to pay off gambling debts. In prison he is visted by Bill Toy and offered a chance at parole, if he agrees to become bodyguard to pharmactical giant Joseph Whitehead. Marty agrees and moves into Sanctuary, Whiteheads English estate where he lives with few servents and his Heroin addicted daughter Carys, who soon takes an interest in Marty.

In London a child killer, Anthony Breer, commits suicide, only to find himself resurrected by a weakening but still dangerous Mamoulian. Years ago Whitehead made a bargan, and the Last European is coming to collect his payment, and Marty's gonna find out what hell is truly about...

Written by Clive Barker (one of my favorite authors), the Damnation Game is Barker's first novel, and more in the mainstream horror genra. Like everything Barker writes it's good (but certanly not his best work). However the plot rarly picks up speed, and merly chugs along at a steady pace. Also Barker writes better then one would expect for a horror story, he also has the ability to write in a manner aproaching poetry, elegant, thoughtful and beautiful then in the same story switch to a more gutteral, blunt, and brutal style of writing giving his characters a greater sense of reality. Overall, The Damnation Game isn't the best introduction to Clive Barker's work (IMHO that honor belongs to The Great and Secret Show), however it will please fans of his work, and fans of horror fiction should find it a good way to pass the time. For everyone else well not essential one could certainly find worse to read, and should keep it in mind when searching for new reading material.

Empire of the Sun is Ballard's semi-autobiographical novel of the Second World War in China. We follow the main character, Jim a young slightly detached boy from a well to do British family in Shanghai, from the beginng of the war when he is seperated from his parents, to the Internment Camp at Lunghua, and the chaos and civil war that followed the Japanese defeat. Along the way Jim incounters brutal and helpful Japanese, a self serving American named Basie, a selfless doctor, and a viscous gang of bandits. As the world he was born to die's Jim builds a childs confused understanding of war. An interesting book, as it shows the war in China threw the eyes of a young boy. Ballard makes us question ourselves, and ask how would I reacte in this situation? Would I be selfless like the Doctor? Or would I place my own survival above all else?

In this climate two young boys, cousins, come of age. One is Moussa DeVries, son of Count Henri and his Tuareg wife Serena. The other is Paul DeVries, son of Col. Jules DeVries and his scheming wife Elizabeth. The two boys are close sharing many adventures until the evil Bishop, Marius Murat takes an unholy interest in Moussa, leading to Henri's death and Moussa's flight to the Sahara.

Years pass. Moussa becomes a warrior of the Tuareg, while Paul, seeking to restore the family name after Jules disgrace in the war with Prussia, joins the military and is sent to Africa. There the two will meet again, enduring discrimination, fanaticsim, the harsh desert, slavery, and a hatered that threatens to destroy everything they both love. At times tender, at others harsh like the land it depects David Ball is commended for taking a forgotten chapter in history, the ill fated Flatters Expedetion and the jihad that followed, and makes them come to life. Recommended.
