The epic poem Beowulf has been retold many times. It's tale of the leagendary hero Beowulf and his heroic deeds is one of the earliest works in th English language. Beowulf, a Geat, comes to the aid of the Danish King Hrothgar who's hell is terroized but the creature known as Grendel. After battling Grendel in unarmed combat Beowulf is forced to fight Grendels Mother. After being richly rewarded by Hrothgar, he returns home where fate will make him King of the Geats and lead him to his doom at the hand of an ancient and powerful dragon.
Beowulf is a must for any serious library and certanly required reading for anyone who chereshes Western Civilization.
